The British Canoe Union became the governing body with the growing popularity of canoeing. The sport was dominated between 1948 to 1956 by Gert Fredriksson, a canoeist from Sweden. His track record also boasts of an impressive six gold medals for individual events and team events in the Olympics. Apart from that, he holds more than 40 gold medals in international canoeing events.
