What Is Smith Rock

Smith Rock is one of two large granite monoliths located in Grants, New Mexico. The other monolithic is Red Granite, located in Grants, which boasts a higher concentration of gypsum and aluminum. Both Smith Rock and Red Granite are featured in National Geographic Traveler’s “50 Places You’ve Never Visited”, which named both as among America’s Most Incredible Places. They’re also listed on many other travel destination lists.

Where Is Smith Rock Located?

Smith Rock lies within the National Park boundaries: it can be accessed by hiking trails that go through an extensive designated trail system or by taking the railroad line south out of Grants, which goes directly into the park. Smith Rock has been home to many climbers, including famous rock climbing clubs such as the Black Diamond Club (operated by climbers led by Kim Crenson), the Smith Mountain Climbmasters, and the South Rim 100-meter routes. Smith Rock also attracts visitors who prefer to camp, which can be available throughout the year and inside the park’s boundaries. In recent years, Smith Rock has become increasingly popular and even managed to attract an all-star sporting event at the nearby Carlsbad Caverns & Wildlife Park. Smith Rock also offers guided tours of the caverns and other attractions in the surrounding area, including the nearby formation of Lake Mead.

What Happens In The Smith Rock Trip?

Smith Rock is an easy day trip from Grants or a complete day trip if you prefer to stay home. Smith Rock contains many great climbing routes, including its famous “Pitch-Classroom” (5.5-inch ATC) Prospector Route and the easier Black Canyon Routes. There are also two parking lots near Smith Rock that are very easy to use for your climb. If you prefer to hang out on the mountain simply, Smith Rock has one of California’s premiere picnic tables and grills. Smith Rock also has a rock-climbing clinic that you can take online to help you prepare for your next climbing trip.

What Should You Expect From Smith Rock?

Smith Rock features many sport routes that are perfect for experienced climbers as well as beginners. Smith Rock also features two popular beginner sport routes, Black Canyon and Crescent. These sport routes are rated safe for all skill levels, making them an excellent option for beginners learning the sport of rock climbing. The easiest of these routes, the Black Canyon, was recently named a National Park and is open to the public.

Smith Rock features several popular routes that are best suited for both experienced and beginning climbers. In addition to the fun activities found at Smith Rock, such as climbing and picnicking, the park offers several activities that families and adults alike will enjoy.
